Report of FHA Coordinating Committee for Walks, Paths, and Trails
A
FHA resolution, passed at the September 3, 2002 meeting established a Coordinating
Committee for Walks, Paths, and Trails, hereafter called The Committee.
THE MANDATE OF THE COMMITTEE INCLUDES:
1. Monitor the condition of walks (paved), paths (graded but unpaved),
and trails (uneven, natural surfaces) in regard to their safe and functional condition.
2. Establish a volunteer group of residents who would be available for
periodic clean-up and maintenance projects on specific walks, paths or trails.
3. Create appropriate documents (maps, brochures, etc.) that would inform
residents of their walking options and serve as tools for developing an overall plan and
policy for supporting walking in Fearrington. This would include new routes perhaps
paralleling and adjacent to busy streets or in newly developed sections of Fearrington.
4. Develop a comprehensive database on the costs and labor requirements
of alternate schemes for constructing and surfacing walks, paths and trails.
SHORT TERM GOALS
1. Recruit volunteers to serve on and organize the work of The Committee.
2. Identify on a map and assign temporary names to existing walks, paths
and trails for the purpose of clarifying discussion.
3. Identify problem areas within the system of walks, paths and trails
and assign some order of priority in addressing them. This may involve soliciting feedback
and commentary from Fearrington residents.
4. Develop a database on methods of surfacing paths so that costs, both
monetary and labor, can be ascertained.
5. Make specific recommendations to the FHA Board as to initial projects.
6. Establish a working relationship with the Fitch organization in regard
to determining the best and most efficient ways to construct, upgrade, or maintain walks,
paths, and trails.
LONG TERM GOALS
1. Expand our database to include methods of constructing walks, paths,
and trails and aspects of their long-term maintenance.
2. Publish a Walk Fearrington Map showing the complete system of walks,
paths and trails and some annotations regarding their nature.
3. Provide the FHA Board with a rationale for a FHA policy toward walking
in Fearrington. |
